The Seminar was opened by UNCTAD’s Secretary General Supachai Panitchpakdi and IPD’s Co-President José Antonio Ocampo with very substantive assessments of the current situation and recommendations for policy options.
The list of speakers and panelists included Lorenzo Bini Smaghi; Patrick Bolton; Lee Buchheit; Guillermo Calvo; Otaviano Canuto; Dominique Desruelle; Ricardo Hausmann; Anne Krueger; Yuefen Li; Fridrik Mar Baldursson; Nouriel Roubini; Jomo Kwame Sundaram; and Jeromin Zettelmeyer.
During the seminar, academics and practictioners debated on the importance to have a debt resolution mechanism. Whilst no view prevailed upon another, it was clear from the discussion that a system aimed at avoiding excessive capital flows, large current account imbalances, and exchange rate misalignments is a necessary condition for avoiding future crises.
