Conference on Principles for Responsible Sovereign Lending and Borrowing

UNCTAD co-hosted the Conference on Principles for Promoting Responsible Sovereign Lending and Borrowing with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Commerce of China in Xiamen, China on 8 September 2010.

This high-level conference examined a proposed set of principles for responsible sovereign lending and borrowing, and for fair treatment in case of default or dispute.

The discussion touched upon  the mutual responsibilities of sovereign borrowers and their lenders in ensuring that debt contracts benefit their respective countries, that contracts are honoured and, in cases of default or dispute, that both parties receive fair treatment.

The conference was held as a part of the UNCTAD 2010 World Investment Forum that will take place during the China International Fair on Trade and Investment (CIFIT), a well respected and prominent international forum.  Panelists will include Ministers, senior representatives of international organizations, the private sector, civil society and academics
